For more information on this podcast, visit us online at puppytalkpodcast.com. Welcome to Puppy Talk episode number 149. Today we're going to talk about does your puppy really need a backyard? Let's get started. A lot of people believe that if you're going to get a puppy, you need to have a house with a big fenced backyard. But do you really? I would argue that you don't. I've raised many dogs, including young puppies, in apartments with no backyard very successfully. In fact, I had more success than if I had a backyard because I had to add structure, discipline, obedience, lease training, and socialization to their daily routine. A backyard can certainly make some things easier, especially potty breaks, but having a backyard doesn't automatically make someone a better puppy owner, and not having one doesn't put you at a disadvantage if you're willing to put in the work. In fact, sometimes having a backyard can create problems because it becomes too easy to open the door and say, go outside, instead of actually interacting with them, training, exercising, and socializing your puppy. Today, let's talk about the pros and cons of having a backyard and why your puppy can do perfectly well without one. Number one, the biggest advantage, convenience. There's no question about this one. When you have an eight or ten week old puppy that needs to potty frequently, opening the back door is easier than putting on shoes, grabbing a leash, walking down a hallway, taking an elevator, and finding a potty area, because we lived on the fifth floor of an apartment community in South Florida. A private backyard can also provide a controlled outdoor environment for young puppies before they are ready for higher risk public areas. But convenience shouldn't be confused with necessity. You can potty train a puppy without a backyard. What you need is a consistent potty location, a predictable schedule, supervision, and reinforcement when your puppy gets it right. Number two, a backyard can actually hurt potty training. This might surprise people. One mistake I see is owners simply opening the back door and letting the puppy outside, unsupervised. Ten minutes later, the puppy comes back inside and pees or poops on the floor. Why? The owner doesn't even know whether the puppy went potty outside or not. The backyard became playtime instead of potty time. When I'm advising on potty training a puppy, I want the owner involved. Take the puppy to the designated potty area, preferably on leash. Give the puppy an opportunity to go potty and reward the puppy when they do. Interestingly, AKC, the American Kennel Club, recommends using a leash during potty training even when you have a fenced yard. Specifically so the puppy focuses on going potty instead of goofing off and making it playtime. A backyard doesn't potty train your puppy. You do. Number three, a backyard isn't a substitute for exercise. This is probably the biggest misconception I would address in this episode. I've got a backyard, my puppy can run around and get plenty of exercise. Maybe. But watch what many dogs actually do when they're put outside alone. They run around a little bit, they have the zoomies, they get that out of their system, then they sniff around, they wander, they lie down, they bark at something, they might run the fence. Simply having access to a large area doesn't guarantee meaningful physical activity. Walks, interactive play, training sessions, sniffing, exploring new environments, and activities with you provide things that simply putting a puppy in the backyard doesn't. There are also behavioral concerns when relying too heavily on a backyard. Dogs left to entertain themselves can develop excessive barking, digging, escape behavior, fence running, and territorial behavior. I get a lot of calls about all of these every day for people that want it stopped. Number four, no backyard can encourage more walks. This is an important one. Here's one of the potential advantages of not having a backyard. You have to take your puppy outside on a leash for a walk, where you can add discipline, obedience, structure, leash training skills, and socialization. Also, your puppy gets to sniff. They hear different sounds, they get desensitized to them instead of afraid of them. They see bicycles, cars, people, dogs, delivery trucks, children, squirrels, garbage cans, and hundreds of other things. They're learning about the world. They're exploring the world. They're being adventurous and building confidence. That's important because socialization isn't simply introducing your puppy to other dogs or people. It's safely exposing your puppy to the sights, sounds, surfaces, environments, and experiences they'll encounter throughout life. Obviously, young puppies need appropriate precautions based on their vaccination status and their veterinarian's recommendations. five, a backyard can create territorial behavior. This is another downside people don't always consider. A puppy discovers this is my yard. Then someone walks past the fence. Bark, bark, bark. The person keeps walking and disappears. From the puppy's perspective, barking worked. Then another dog walks past. The puppy charges the fence and barks. The dog eventually disappears too. The puppy gets another opportunity to practice the behavior. Repeat that hundreds of times, and you've potentially created a behavior problem. The backyard itself isn't the problem. Unsupervised access to the backyard is the problem. six backyards have safety concerns too. People sometimes think a fenced yard equals a safe puppy. Not necessarily. Puppies can dig under fences, squeeze through openings, eat plants, chew sticks, encounter wildlife, get into chemicals, or find things you didn't even realize were outside. Weather is another consideration. A fenced yard gives you a controlled space, but it doesn't mean you should simply put your puppy outside and stop supervising them. The AKC American Kennel Club recommends supervising yard time even after you've puppy-proofed the area. 7. What your puppy actually needs. Your puppy doesn't need a backyard to be raised successfully. Your puppy needs you. They need appropriate exercise. They need training. They need safe exposure to the world. They need opportunities to sniff and explore. They need supervision. And they need interaction with you. You can provide every one of these things while living in an apartment. I know because I've done so with two of the best dogs on the planet, Spaulding and Dixie. And you can have a beautiful one-acre fenced backyard and provide almost none of them. In review, should you avoid getting a puppy because you don't have a backyard? Absolutely not. If you have a backyard, enjoy it. It's convenient, and it can be a fantastic place to train, play, explore, and spend time together. Just don't use it as a babysitter. And if you don't have a backyard, don't think you're somehow giving your puppy a lesser life. Take your puppy outside, go for walks, explore new places, take them to home improvement stores, hobby lobby, outdoor malls, festivals, play together, let them sniff, let them experience the world. Because ultimately, the quality of your puppy's life isn't determined by the size of your backyard. It's determined by what you do with your puppy. I hope this information was helpful to you.
